About Julian Nikolchev and his family

Julian Nikolchev, a giant in the world of medical device technology startups and health innovation, and a dear friend and mentor to many in the Silicon Valley community, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday January 7th, 2024.

Julian was an entrepreneur first, passionate about identifying and tackling unmet healthcare needs through cutting-edge technological solutions. He was Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Ventures at Intuitive and a founding member of Intuitive Ventures.

As a young immigrant who fled Bulgaria with his parents and sister to escape the oppression of the Communist Bloc in the late 1960s, Julian lived his life embracing the power of creative thought, artistic freedom, educational opportunity, and the spirit of entrepreneurship.

Julian was beloved husband to Betsy Nikolchev, father to Anthony and Alexandra Nikolchev, father-in-law to Anthony’s wife Gema Galiana, and the oh-so-playful and fun Dedo (Bulgarian word for grandfather) to Gael and Oríon Galiana Nikolchev. Daughter Alexandra is a documentary filmmaker and son Anthony is a director, actor, writer and educator in theater arts; both value the power of storytelling to create a more empathetic and connected world.

Betsy has been committed to advancing educational equity and social justice, focused on early childhood through higher education as founder of Family Engagement Institute (FEI) at Foothill College benefiting first generation families. FEI provided 8,000+ families culturally responsive college courses; 1,700+ educators equity-minded professional development; 400+ first generation youth leadership and mentorship; and prepared 950+ young children for school success.

Together, Betsy and Julian want to leave a legacy where hope lies in the leadership and decision making of the community…their talents, empathy, wisdom, courage, and stories.
