Volunteer SpotlightYoung Professionals

We are delighted to spotlight Hannah Alpert, YP member and active volunteer at CSA. She has been with the Young Professionals group since January of 2021. Attending monthly meetings, networking with CSA staff, helping plan Empty Glasses, delivering food to COVID-positive clients, and volunteering at the Back-to-School event we held in July are just a few of the ways she has recently been involved in the CSA community. We recently spoke to Hannah to learn more about her background and what she has experienced through YP.

Tell us a little about yourself (where you are from, what you are passionate about, etc.):
I grew up near Boston and lived on the East Coast until I realized that it was possible to live in a place without snow. In 2015, I moved to California to study aerospace engineering at Stanford. I’m currently an engineer at NASA Ames, where I work on technologies that allow spacecraft to enter a planet’s atmosphere without burning up. Some of my other hobbies include hiking, camping, making and eating ice cream, and doing crossword puzzles.

What inspired you to join YP?
When I moved to the area, I was looking for a way to get to know the local community better and make a positive impact on the neighborhood. CSA’s commitment to supporting the local community with such a comprehensive set of services is both inspiring and extremely important. It seemed like the perfect organization to join to make a difference in the community, meet interesting people, and contribute to building a supportive neighborhood.

How has YP impacted you?
YP has been a great way to meet like-minded people who are interested in making a difference in the community, while learning more about local issues and how I can help.

Are you involved in your community in any other ways?
Until the pandemic hit, I was volunteering at a local farm that has programs for children with chronic illnesses and special needs, and I am looking forward to returning to that when things open back up! I’m also involved in programs that promote women and minorities in STEM. Other than that, I love spending time outdoors in the community – hiking, playing tennis and basketball in the local parks, and walking around the downtown areas (especially with the streets closed to cars!).
